About 5 hours door to door · from £300

Heathrow to your ship at Southampton, with Stonehenge on the way

The same journey in reverse, for embarkation day. Flying in early and boarding in the afternoon leaves a gap that is long enough to be useful and short enough to be awkward — this fills it.

Embarkation day has the same shape as disembarkation, only backwards. You land at Heathrow in the morning, boarding does not open until the afternoon, and the gap in between is too long to sit in an airport and too short to do anything properly. Stonehenge sits almost exactly on the road between the two.

We meet you in arrivals, load the cases once, and they stay in the car until we hand them over at the cruise terminal. You see the stones on the way rather than making a separate trip for them, and you arrive at the ship having done something with your first day rather than waiting for it.

Allow about five hours from arrivals to the quayside, two of them yours at Stonehenge. It is the more forgiving direction of the two, because the fixed deadline — your boarding time — is at the end, where we can see it coming.

The quote form opens with this itinerary already in it — pickup, the stop or stops, the destination and a half-written note for you to finish. Change anything you like before sending it. Nothing is charged through the website.

Guide prices for a standard car, one way. The final price depends on the number of passengers, the amount of luggage, your exact addresses and the time of day. We confirm the price when we come back to you, and nothing is charged through this website.

What the day looks like

Hour by hour, from pickup to drop-off

The times are elapsed hours from pickup, not clock times — the day starts whenever you are ready. On average the whole thing runs to 5 hours door to door.

  1. 0:00

    Met in arrivals at Heathrow

We plan the pickup around when you are realistically likely to walk out, not the scheduled landing time — immigration and the baggage belt make far more difference than the flight does. Send the flight number and we will follow the arrival.

  2. 0:15

West out of London on the M3 and A303

About ninety minutes to the visitor centre. The last part of the drive crosses Salisbury Plain, and on a clear day the monument is visible from the road well before the turning.

  3. 1:45

Arrive at the Stonehenge visitor centre

We drop you at the entrance with your timed ticket. Bags stay with the car; if anyone wants a change of clothes or a coat out of a case before you go in, this is the moment.

  4. 3:45

Two hours on site, then back to the car

The circle, the shuttle or the walk, the exhibition and the Neolithic houses. If you are running short of sleep after an overnight flight, an hour is genuinely enough and we can set off early — the ship is the only fixed point.

  5. 3:55

    South to Southampton

An hour through Wiltshire and Hampshire down to the water. We will already know which terminal your ship is at; there are four, and they are not close together.

  6. 4:55

    Drop-off at your cruise terminal

Right at the terminal entrance, cases handed over to the porters. Tell us your boarding time when you book and we aim to have you there comfortably inside it, not on the last call.

About 5 hours door to door. That is an average rather than a timetable: traffic, disembarkation and how long you linger all move it. We build slack into the plan rather than timing it to the minute, and we would rather tell you a journey does not fit than start one that cannot.

Stonehenge

A Neolithic stone circle on Salisbury Plain, about an hour from Southampton. Run by English Heritage, with a visitor centre a mile and a half from the stones.

Stonehenge is the best known prehistoric monument in Europe. The earthwork enclosure was dug around 3000 BC and the great sarsen stones were raised a few centuries later, so what you are looking at took shape over roughly fifteen hundred years — longer than the span between the Norman conquest and today. It stands in a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also takes in Avebury and the burial mounds spread across the surrounding downland.

You arrive at the visitor centre off the A360, which is where we set you down. The stones themselves are a mile and a half further on: a shuttle bus runs between the two continuously, or you can walk it across the fields in about half an hour and ride back. A marked path takes you around the circle — close enough to pick out the joints cut into the lintels and the stones that have fallen — although visitors do not walk in among the stones during normal opening hours.

The visitor centre holds an exhibition of objects found in the landscape, including human remains and grave goods from the barrows nearby, and a film that puts you in the middle of the circle. Outside it stands a group of Neolithic houses reconstructed from the evidence found at Durrington Walls up the road, usually with volunteers inside demonstrating how the builders lived. There is a café and a shop.

What you will see

  • The stone circle, from the path that runs around it
  • The Heel Stone and the Avenue, aligned on the midsummer sunrise
  • The exhibition of finds from the surrounding landscape
  • The reconstructed Neolithic houses outside the visitor centre
  • Bronze Age burial mounds scattered across the downs, seen on the walk out
  • The audio guide included with admission, taken at your own pace

Before you go: Stonehenge

  • Admission is by timed ticket, booked in advance with English Heritage, and slots sell out in summer. Book yours first and tell us the time — we plan the drive around it.
  • English Heritage suggest allowing at least two hours from arrival, which is what these journeys are built to give you.
  • It is open downland with no shelter at the monument. It is colder and windier out there than in Southampton, so bring a coat whatever the forecast says.
  • The path around the stones is surfaced and level, and English Heritage run accessible shuttles between the visitor centre and the monument. Check the details with them when you book, and tell us if anyone in your party needs step-free access.

What you are paying for

What is included, and what is not

The fare covers the car, the driving and the waiting time. Everything else is listed on the right so there are no surprises on the day.

Included in the fare

  • A private car and driver from arrivals through to the ship
  • All the driving shown, about 103 miles including the detour
  • Two hours of waiting at Stonehenge while you are on site
  • Meeting you inside the terminal at Heathrow, with your luggage loaded once
  • Your luggage kept in the vehicle for the whole journey
  • A price agreed before the day rather than a meter running while you are inside

Not included

  • Admission to Stonehenge — timed tickets from English Heritage, booked in advance.
  • Food and drink, though the visitor centre café is a reasonable first meal in England after a long flight.
  • A guided tour of the site. Your driver gets you there and waits; the audio guide comes with your ticket.
  • Airport parking or trolley charges beyond the meeting arrangement we agree with you.
  • Gratuities, entirely at your discretion.

What to tell us when you ask

  • Give us the flight number and the terminal. We follow the arrival, so a delayed flight moves the plan instead of losing you the car.
  • Tell us your ship and your boarding time. Everything is planned backwards from the moment you have to be at the terminal.
  • Book the Stonehenge slot for the middle of the day and send us the time. Late morning to early afternoon is the easiest window to hit after a morning landing.
  • If you are coming off a long-haul overnight flight, be honest with yourself about how much you want to be standing on a windy plain. A shorter stop is a perfectly good version of this day.
  • Tell us the passenger and luggage count. Cruise luggage plus flight luggage is the same luggage, but there is usually a lot of it.

Questions people ask about this day

What if our flight is delayed?

Give us the flight number when you book and we will keep track of it. A delay moves the pickup; whether the Stonehenge stop survives depends on how big the delay is and how much room your boarding time leaves. We will tell you straight rather than starting a drive that cannot work.

Is there time to do this before boarding closes?

Usually, if you land in the morning and board in the afternoon. The whole journey averages five hours including the stop. If your landing is late morning and boarding closes early, it gets tight — send us both times and we will say whether it holds.

Can we change clothes or freshen up anywhere?

There are toilets at the Stonehenge visitor centre and your cases are in the car, so people do use that stop to get a coat or a change of top out. It is not a hotel room, and if that is what you need it is better to say so up front and let us plan a different day.

Can you collect from Gatwick instead?

Yes. It is a longer first leg — Gatwick sits further east — so the day runs closer to five and a half hours. Tell us which airport you are flying into and we will price it properly.
